Oncology Research Institute of the Greenville Hospital System

In the laboratories of cell biology, molecular biology, and developmental biology, researchers at Greenville Hospital System Oncology Research Institute are working to discover innovative approaches to cancer treatment. This is basic research – where a promising treatment begins with the question, “What if ... ?”

Current projects include a way to use lytic peptides to target prostate cancer cells, and the development of a human prolactin antagonist to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells.

The Clinical Research Unit of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas, in partnership with the Greenville Hospital Cancer Center, is pleased to announce an expansion of their immunobiologic program. Recently approved by the Western Institutional Biosafety Committee, the Clinical Research Unit is now conducting early phase trials utilizing gene-based therapies for a variety of malignancies including lung, colon, and pancreatic cancers.

Gene therapy involves taking virus cells that have been neutralized (no longer can spread disease) to replace a sequence of DNA that created cancer cells. As this section of DNA is replaced, cancer cells become normal cells.

Upcoming Breast Cancer Clinical Trial

The provision of NCI based clinical trials is a hallmark of the GHS Breast Multidisciplinary Center (MDC) and Cancer Centers of the Carolinas. We are proud to have played a key role in previous breast and colon cancer prevention studies. Later this fall we will offer participation in a new nationwide breast cancer prevention study.
